Arc
Describes the circular rotating pattern of the spray on a sprinkler. For example, a sprinkler with a 180-degree arc would spray a half-circle.
Check Valve
A tiny device facilitating the movement of water in only ONE direction.
Controller
Also commonly referred to as a “timer,” this device is responsible for turning an automatic irrigation system on and off. Once programmed to operate on its own, it can perform a variety of functions.
GPM
This is an abbreviation for gallons per minute, a reference unit in regards to volume of water. Each sprinkler head requires a specific GPM to operate effectively.
Main Line
A pipe that connects the water supply to the control valves in each irrigation zone.
Polyethylene Pipe
A black, elastic pipe that is often used in irrigation systems that withstand colder climates.
PSI
This is an abbreviation for Pounds Per Square Inch, a common reference unit in regards to water pressure.
Polyvinyl Chloride Pipe (PVC)
A white, rigid pipe that is often used in irrigation systems that withstand warmer climates.
Rotors
Sprinklers that discharge a steady flow of water to irrigation areas.
Spray Head
Sprinkler heads with interchangeable nozzles that spray water in specific circular patterns.
Station
Each zone of the irrigation area that is controlled by a separate valve. When purchasing a timer, if there are 6 zones on the landscape, you will need a 6-station controller.
Zone
An irrigation area under the control of one sprinkler valve.
