Chances are, at some point or other, you're going to get sick of that grimy mildewy shower curtain. Either you've spent hours washing the mildew out of the curtain, or you've spent a lot of money constantly replacing it. Shower doors offer a nice alternative to the traditional shower curtain. Also, they tend to significantly raise the interior aesthetics of the bathroom. Shower doors come in kits, and are fairly easy to assemble yourself.
First choose the shower kit that you want to use. Be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions (as different kits will vary somewhat in their installation). Lastly, lay out all of the parts to make sure that nothing is missing.
Step 1 - Marking Plumb Layout Lines
First you need to mark plumb layout lines for the track. Using a ¼-inch bit, drill the holes for the track anchors (if you have ceramic tile walls, use masonry bits instead). Taking the wall anchors, tap them into the holes that you have just drilled.
Step 2 - Hanging the Door
Following the manufacturer's instructions, simply hang the doors on the tracks.
Step 3 - Applying the Caulk
Lastly, apply the caulk everywhere that the track meets the walls and the top of the tub. Also be sure to apply caulk to both the inside and the outside of the tub. (For more specific instructions on applying caulk, refer to our guide to applying caulk).
