Whether you are installing new tiles, walls, and/or a tub-or simply resealing an existing job, applying the caulk is an essential finishing touch. Caulk provides a flexible seal between materials that may have different rates of expansion and contraction. Caulk should be applied to all edges of the tub, between the tub and the floor, and where the floor meets the wall.
You should use a tub and tile caulk that is a blend of silicone and latex. Silicone is very durable, while latex is easier to apply smoothly. Choosing a blend of the two will give you the best qualities of both.
Step 1 - Scrape Out Old Grout/Caulk
Scrape out any existing grout or caulk with an awl or similar object (try a can opener, for example). If there is any soap scum on the joint, wipe it away with a clean cloth and rubbing alcohol.
Step 2 - Fill in Caulk
Either stand in the tub or fill the tub with water so that it will be heavy enough to pull away from the tile. Apply masking tape to both sides of the joint you want to caulk (to prevent the caulk from sneaking into grout joints). Fill the joints with the caulk. Be sure to maintain a steady pressure and move at a rate that will fill the crack without overflowing.
Step 3 - Smooth Caulk and Remove Tape
Wet your fingers with cold water (so the caulk won't stick to them). Smooth and level the compound into a neat, slightly concave bead. Then simply peel off the tape for a nice straight bead of caulk.
