Choosing the sink that will work perfectly in your bathroom is not an easy decision. There are many different things that one must consider. The information below is provided to help you pick out a perfect sink for your particular tastes!
Installation Type (Show me examples!)
When selecting what type of sink you want, you should first consider what type of installation options are available to you.
Above Counter – Also known as vessels, these sinks stand freely on cabinets and provide you with the opportunity to make a big fashion statement. However, make sure to select a faucet with a spout long and tall enough to reach the bowl. In certain situations, wall-mounted faucets will work best. Furthermore, these sinks are typically manufactured without an overflow. If this is the case, a grid drain must be installed to prevent possible flooding.
Pedestal – These sinks are offered in a variety of styles, ranging from modern to traditional designs. They are perfect to purchase for small bathrooms because they save space. Bowl sizes are more than sufficient for regular use, but the sinks don’t offer any underneath storage space.
Self-Rimming (countertop) – These sinks are offered in a large variety of sizes, shapes, and hole configurations. They are mounted from above the counter with a visible rim that lies across the surface.
Tile-In – These sinks have a “tile-in” edge. They are designed to mount even with a tiled surface so that there is no visible separation between the sink and the surface.
Undercounter – These sinks are installed from underneath the counter and do not have a rim. Any solid surface countertop of manmade material, natural stone or concrete will allow for an undercounter sink to be installed. A mounting kit is required.
Wall Mount – These sinks are installed on the wall. They save both floor and cabinet space. Like Pedestal lavatories, they are very popular in smaller bathrooms.
Size
Your sink choice will be restricted by the size of your built-in cabinetry, countertops, and bathroom itself. If you are installing a self rimming, undercounter, or tile in sink, you will need to find out the size of your cabinet by measuring under the existing sink or where the new sink will go. Obviously, your sink can’t be bigger than the cabinet. Furthermore, regardless of which lavatory you select, you will need at least 15” of space from the centerline of the bowl to the nearest wall. If you are installing a double bowl lavatory sink, you will also need 30” of space between the centerlines of each bowl. Lastly, you will need 30”(L) x 48” (W) of space immediately in front of the lavatory.
Shape
In most cases, selecting a shape is a matter of personal preference. Most can generally be described as either circular or rectangular in figure. However, we strive to provide you with a unique selection and give you other search options including:
Materials
Lavatory sinks are manufactured using many different materials. Just to name a few, enameled cast iron, porcelain on steel, vitreous china, glass, and stainless steel can all be found in today’s modern bathrooms. Despite this wide variety of options, cast iron remains the material of choice for consumers seeking a colored finished. Below are descriptions of various materials:
Enameled Cast Iron - Enameled cast iron is the optimal choice if you desire a fashionable, colored sink. The material itself is comprised of a solid cast iron base that is layered with a deep enamel surface. This makes for an extremely heavy construction that is resistant to almost any type of structural damage. Consequently, enameled cast iron is more difficult to install and tends to cost more than porcelain or stainless steel. Nevertheless, it will save you money in the long run because it should last forever.
Porcelain on Steel - This material is made by combining an embossed steel casing with a layer of a specially, glazed clay. This creates a smooth and appealing surface that will remain strong if the sink is used normally. It is relatively lightweight, and thus, cheaper than many other materials. However, if a large object is dropped into the sink, and subsequently causes a big impact, the sink may damage. Furthermore, the sink tends to produce a good amount of operating noise.
Corian - Natural minerals and acrylic resin are processed together in order to fabricate this material. It is similar in construction to granite, but is cheaper and able to be fixed in the event that it breaks. It’s durable and easy to clean. However, it is susceptible to scratching by corrosive fuel based products and metal objects, if they are left on the surface.
Vitreous China - A ceramic-based material, vitreous china is best recognized for its smooth and glossy finish. The material is very durable and is available in almost any color, including hand-painted and sculptured designs. Unfortunately, boiling water or heavy objects that fall into the sink can damage the surface.
Glass - These sinks are stronger than most would tend to think. However, a disadvantage of a glass sink is that if it is not wiped down and dried after use, water spots will show on the surface.
Stainless Steel - These sinks are very solid and should not rust.
Hole Configuration
As is the case in kitchen sinks, the type of hole configuration you select should depend on the type of faucet you are planning to install. Not all lavatory sinks present you with an option to choose the type of drilling. Lavatory sinks can be drilled in three ways:
Configuration
Purpose
One Hole
Allows for a faucet with a single lever handle (no separate hot and cold handles.)
Three Hole - Centerset (4”)
Allows for a faucet with separate hot and cold handles. You should select a spacing that will accommodate the faucet you wish to install.
