Getting rid of food waste can be one of the most laborious and smelly chores in the world. Luckily for you, it doesn’t have to be that way. Investing in a garbage disposer will be one of the best decisions you make for your kitchen. So be smart, and don’t cut corners where going the extra yard can make all the difference in the world.

What Does a Disposer Do?
  • Provides you with faster meal preparation and cleanup
  • Helps to sanitize your kitchen sink area
  • Decreases the amount of garbage that you need to bag
  • Because less garbage is bagged, you help to keep the environment cleaner
  • No bad food odor in garbage

    Continuous Feed vs. Batch Feed
  • Continuous Feed: Most disposers are continuous feed and manually controlled by a wall or sink-top switch. This helps to keep hands clear of the disposer when it’s turned on. While operating, the mouth of the unit remains open and is protected by a rubber anti-splash baffle. This permits you to continuously feed waste into the grinder. However, the baffle will wear, and thus must occasionally be replaced.
  • Batch Feed: A Bath feed disposer is a safer model that only functions when the stopper is placed into the drain. This keeps the mouth of the unit closed off while operating and in turn prevents you from grinding your hands by accident. Because no wall or sink-top switch is needed, installation will also be easier. However, you can't continually feed waste into the disposer of a batch feed model. Only the "batch" already under the stopper can be disposed of at a given time. Despite this limitation, which only comes into effect if you need to process large amounts of waste, we strongly suggest installing a batch feed disposer. For only a slight increase in price, you can help guarantee the safety of yourself and children. This notion has already started to catch on in the Northeastern states, and it's time for the rest of the world to realize it as well.

    Features To Consider
  • Horsepower: Disposers with the most power will operate the quickest and most effectively. It is generally acknowledged that motors with up to 1 hp are suitable for use in residential homes.
  • Noise Reduction: While speed and power are positive features in a disposer, operating noise can be very annoying. You can moderate operating noise through the use of induction motors and insulated grind chambers.
  • Components (Material): Stainless steel and chrome are the strongest materials and will enable disposers to last for years.
  • Warranties: Every Company offers a unique warranty. Typically, the bigger and more powerful the model, the longer it will be. Be confident in your selection – make sure the manufacturer stands behind their products.

    What you should do
  • Throw away food scraps into the disposer, not the garbage.
  • Make sure to run cold water into the disposer if you are disposing small amounts of fats and greases.
  • Use your disposer to grind all hard materials (Ex. chicken bones)
  • Peel citrus fruits and process the rind to freshen the drain.

    What you should not do
  • Do not use hot water when grinding food waste.
  • Do not stop running cold water into the disposer until you have finished grinding the waste.
  • Do not turn off the disposer in the middle of operation.
  • Do not put glass or metal (eating utensils) into the disposer.
  • DO NOT PUT YOUR HANDS INTO THE CHAMBER.
  • Avoid grinding high-fiber materials (Ex. Corn husks)
