Although it is rare to see a bidet in an American home, it is a bathroom fixture that has great importance. The bidet offers a solution to a number of problems regarding germs and cleanliness. It is not a competitor of the bathtub or shower stall, and it is not a different kind of toilet. It is to be used in conjunction with the bathtub, toilet and shower. The modern day bidets are sit-down washbasins, styled to resemble the shape of a toilet. The bidet is placed next to the toilet in the bathroom.

Types of Bidets  (Show me examples!)

There are different types of bidets:

    Over the Rim
This model is fitted with a standard faucet. The bowl is filled with water the same way you fill a sink. This is generally the cheapest and simplest type to install. Having a rimless bowl makes easy to clean.

    Flushing Rim (Heated Rim)
This unit has Hot/Cold handles on top, but the water enters the bowl below the rim of the basin.

    Sprays  (Show me examples!)

The more popular models are equipped with a spray, which provides a gentle shower. There are two types of sprays:

    Vertical
Has a fountain jet in the center of the bowl and delivers a gentle stream of water for a localized cleansing of the body.

    Horizontal
Has special over the rim spout that delivers a horizontal stream of water *It is important to note that when choosing a bidet the spray style must match the design of the bidet. It must be decided what type of bidet would accommodate your needs the best.

    Styles  (Show me examples!)
Bidets are offered in various colors and styles, from the traditional to the contemporary.

    Who will use a bidet?
Both men and women can use a bidet. Also, all those concerned about cleanness and health, pregnant women and every member of the family can use it. Because the bidet is an important aid to personal hygiene, the bidet is gaining popularity among senior citizens, the disabled and those with impaired motor functions. Adding a wall mounted grab bar can help the user get up and down more easily.

How do you use a bidet?
Some bidets, (i.e. the conventional models) are designed to be sat upon, legs astride, facing the faucets. While sitting, just turn on the water. When the water is at the right temperature, you can increase the pressure to direct a stream or spray of water towards the parts of the body that need cleaning. Other bidets that are designed with seats, allow the user to sit on the bidet the same way they would on a toilet.
